Technology Functions at BNP Paribas

My name is Dipen Shar and I went to Warwick University and studied Computer Science and Business Studies. I started at BNP Paribas on a summer internship in August 2008 and I came back as a graduate in September 2009. And now I’ve begun working in the Credit IT Risk area. The IT Credit Risk area is really about supporting the business in activities, making sure all the systems are running smoothly, the numbers on their screens are accurate and available in a timely manner, so that they can make their decisions off it.

A typical day in my team would be to arrive and have a status update from the Asia teams, work out what they’ve been doing overnight, any issues they had, any current problems or blocks and then really make yourself available and address the queries coming in from traders downstairs.

So we use two different systems all the time. The ‘Limac’ system and it’s where we store all the risk for our side of the bank. On my left is my colleague Sandrine, she’s my project manager. Here we have Shati. She’s my guide, if you like. She’s a previous grad before me so she’s been there, done that.

My colleagues are from a huge variety of backgrounds but when we’re all in a team together, we’re very open, we’re collaborative, and really we understand some of the urgency of the work we have to do. So it’s very clear when work is work and a joke’s a joke, you don’t really distinguish the two it just happens seamlessly.

I sit in a role which faces developers, faces testers but at the same time it faces the users and faces the business analysts, so we’re really in kind of a synergy role.

BNP Paribas should always be considered by students and graduates as a potential employer because there’s nothing stopping them from coming here to enjoy what I’ve experienced.
