ATO (AUTONOMOUS TRAIN OPERATION)
What is the AUTONOMOUS TRAIN?
Alstom is working since years, with European consortium, to establish the specification of the future autonomous train. The Alstom’s team is working with several operators (SNCF, DB, Prorail), on proof of concepts solutions in France, in England, Germany and in Nederland. We are now developing commercial solution for our customers (Stuttgart, India, Luxembourg). The Autonomous train is one of priority of Alstom Innovation Programs.
The main goal of the automation of the train is to improve the traffic management and to help the driver to ensure the respect of the timetables. In the first grades of automation, the Alstom product is a support to the driver to manage his trip and to respect the timetables. In further grade of automation, the autonomous train will manage alone, the train preparation, the configuration of the mission, the detection of signals and obstacles, the management of events in the train and will improve, in safety, the traveler experience.
Moreover, in the climatic context, Alstom is strongly involved in the Green Mobility and has already integrated algorithms to save at maximum the energy when driving the train. Contests are organized with drivers to compare the driving styles of the machine and the human and have shown a reduction of energy consumption up to 40%.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
By joining a multidisciplinary, multicultural, and international team, your mission as ATO System Engineer will be to
- Analyze, the needs of our commercial or R&D projects
- Analyze the technical risks and define the adequate solution
- Elaborate formal modelling and requirements writing
- Define the specifications to lead the development teams to develop the future autonomous trains.
- Define the system architecture of our future solutions
- Be the partner of RAM, Safety, Cyber, software, hardware and V&V team to develop design concepts
Education - Engineering Degree (BAC +4 or 5) in Aerospace, Software, Electronics, Automation, Electricity or Robotics, Computer sciences (Machine learning, Artificial intelligence).
Experience / Skills
- Experienced in (UML, SADT, SysML) modelling by using ASAP (Advanced System Architecture Program) methodology with PTC IM tool or ARCADIA methodology (with CAPELLA tool), Matlab / Simulink
- Experienced in requirement management (specification, interfaces, architecture, traceability)
- Background in safety systems (e.g. automotive, aerospace, railways...)
- Interest in system design or system engineering
- Knowledge of railways signaling systems (ERTMS ideally, CBTC…)
Methodologies & tools - V-Cycle/Waterfall and Agile development methodologies
Language – A good command of French and English are mandatory.

ALSTOM BELGIUM – Center of Excellence for Rail Signalling Systems
The site in Charleroi has developed unique expertise in complete systems that operate at a global level and focuses on signalling and railway traffic control systems, with a particular emphasis on equipment that complies with the European standard (European Rail Traffic Management System/ ERTMS). The teams develop systems, manufacture prototypes, perform tests and trials, complete approval procedures and manage integration projects. An after-sales/service activity completes the offer for these product groups. Alstom Belgium pursues an ambitious growth strategy by actively investing in R&D.
DEVELOPMENT CENTER IN CHARLEROI – Where Software Engineering meets Mobility Solutions
Alstom Development Center located in Charleroi, regroups all the R&D activities that aim to develop Alstom’s Signalling solutions, mainly ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) solutions.
Alstom Charleroi DC teams (about 200 experts - System Engineers, Embedded Software experts, V&V Engineers…) are driving innovative development programs with the ambition to keep and improve Alstom’s world-leading position on today and tomorrow digital mobility solutions for which Software Engineering is clearly one of the core competencies (Train control systems, Signalling Systems, Automatic Operation…).
