Tesla, headquartered in Palo Alto, CA, develops high-performance electric vehicles, battery energy storage systems, and solar energy technology. The focus is to reduce the environmental impact of transportation and electric energy use by accelerating the adoption of electric vehicle, energy storage, and solar technologies.

Tesla’s Energy products business unit is focused on increasing levels of dispatchable renewable electricity generation.  The suite of battery energy storage systems developed by Tesla also performs a variety of other high value functions for utilities, businesses, and residential customers. The fast-growing Project Engineering team is adding a top team member to focus on the deployment of Battery Energy Storage projects in Europe, Middle East and Africa.


The internship assignment

The Project Engineer Intern (m/w) role is multi-faceted but focuses primarily on the delivery of large-scale projects. The role provides support to Tesla’s customers during the design and approval phase of a project, and on to the installation and commissioning of systems.

The Project Engineers based in Europe provide a key link between Tesla products/projects in their region and the engineering and manufacturing teams based in the US. It is vital that they have the skills and ability to work on a wide range of engineering issues and the knowledge and experience to operate with a high degree of self-sufficiency. The broad scope of this role requires strong knowledge of engineering fundamentals across mechanical, electrical and thermal. Learning goals & Tasks

  • Learn how to act as Tesla point of contact during the design and permitting phase of a project:
  • Articulate how Tesla’s technology can be deployed in various applications / sites
  • Review/provide final system designs (electrical, mechanical, control & data)
  • Produce any documentation required to facilitate the safe and effective delivery of a project
  • Support the approval / permitting process and interconnection agreement of new projects
  • Liaise with contractors, installers and customers as required
  • Contribute to the installation and commissioning phase of projects:
    • Liaise with contractors, installers and customers as required
    • Work alongside Tesla service engineers to perform commissioning
    • Assist with programming and testing of system controls
  • Learn from operational systems and assist in disseminating this information within the Energy organization.


Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering (renewable energy and power system background is a plus). Master level preferred.
  • Knowledge of battery systems, power conversion, and electricity grid systems.
  •  An ability to prioritize and execute many tasks in parallel.
  •  An excellent attention to detail and an ability to produce clear and concise written documents and diagrams.
  •  Professional fluency in English and an additional European language is a plus.
  •  Willingness to travel in the region as required for the benefits of the projects.
  •  Active student status throughout the duration of the internship.
