The Internship Assignment

Tesla, headquartered in Palo Alto, CA, develops high-performance electric vehicles and electric powertrain technology.  The mission of Tesla is to reduce the environmental impact of transportation energy use by accelerating the spread of electric vehicle technology to as many people as possible.  As electric cars are only as clean as the grids that charge them, Tesla has also developed a business unit built on top of the same vehicle powertrain technology to allow for increasing levels of renewable generation on the grid. Furthermore, the suite of battery systems developed by Tesla also performs a variety of high value functions for utilities, businesses, and residential customers. In the near term, Tesla Energy Products will become a multi-billion dollar business unit in annual turnover, and our fast-growing team is always searching for new top team members in the fields of engineering, business, and sales in order to support this growth.


Learning goals and Tasks

  • Provide support to the EMEA Tesla Energy Products sales team in performing analysis, building business cases, preparing responses and winning energy storage projects (sales proposals, technical analysis, costs calculations, technical specifications, technical layouts, etc.)
  • Participate in the conceptual preliminary site design and basic electrical engineering of battery storage systems
  • Work closely with the team to develop system modelling for multiple battery storage use cases and optimization in order to minimize levelized cost of energy and storage
  • Gather market data and support local and global Tesla teams in developing market strategies and offerings
  • Support in any other day-to-day activities as required

 

In particular, the intern will be responsible for:

  • Interact with customers to understand project opportunities and obtain necessary information
  • Perform analyses by leveraging existing and new tools to evaluate opportunities
  • Prepare first class proposals documents and ensure proposals requirements are met and submitted on time
  • Assist in the creation of price offers, site layouts, and all documents which could be required as part of a proposal
  • Assist in analyzing, reporting and distributing market knowledge (competition, trends)

 

Through this experience, the candidate will be able to gain the following experience:

  • Acquire insight into the nascent energy storage market.
  • Build a hands-on experience of sales, technical, and commercial frameworks of energy infrastructure projects
  • Understand requirements to succeed as a Sales Engineer
  • Work in an exciting, fast paced, multicultural and cross-functional environment


Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters in Electrical engineering or other technical background preferred
  • Active student status during the 6-month internship
  • Solid grasp of basic data analysis, modelling, electrical and systems engineering
  • Fluency in both English (excellent written and verbal skills) and an additional language (French preferred)
  • Project management skills, including ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and workstreams in parallel
  • Good CAD skills is a plus
  • Knowledge of Python or MATLAB is a plus
  • Knowledge of energy storage, solar PV or wind power system design generally is a plus
