At the Institute for Energy and Climate Research - Techno-Economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3), we research how a sustainable energy system can be achieved and what it could look like. To this end, we develop a wide range of highly complex and detailed techno-economic models that we utilize to assess local-to-global energy systems in an integrated manner. Thereby, we aim to provide the best possible knowledge-based support for the implementation of the sustainable energy transition.

Your Job:

You will support us in delivering orientation knowledge to political, industrial and social actors for the successful implementation of the energy transition by strengthening our team in the domain of global hydrogen supply. Your areas of research will include:

  • The international trade of renewable resources such as hydrogen, power-to-liquid products, etc. in order to determine the best worldwide transformation paths
  • Global generation and demand potential for hydrogen produced using renewable energy sources
  • The analysis of transportation options, including pipelines, the marine transport of power-to-liquid products, LOHCs, and ammonia
  • Transformation paths spanning the provision of fossil fuels to green hydrogen
  • Modeling the global hydrogen trade by taking into account the geostrategic security of supply

Your duties will include, amongst other tasks:

  • Conducting scientific studies in the context of energy system modeling (e.g., the influence of climate change on renewable energy sources, integrated infrastructure modeling, and holistic energy scenarios)
  • Modeling and programming of energy systems, especially with Python
  • Supervision of students
  • Participation in project meetings and cooperation with internal and external partners
  • Presentation of your research results at (international) meetings and conferences, as well as in the form of publications in relevant journals

Your Profile:

  • University degree (Master) with above-average grades in an engineering discipline (i.e., energy technology, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, process engineering, industrial engineering), physics, or a comparable course of study
  • Knowledge of energy technology and, ideally, energy system modeling and energy economics
  • Programming skills, especially in Python
  • Fluent written and spoken English and/or German
  • Excellent ability to work as part of a team and in a cooperative manner
  • Independent and analytical way of working

We usually offer a contract for a period of 3 years as part of a doctorate from RWTH Aachen. Pay in line with 75% of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) and additionally 60 % of a monthly salary as special payment ("Christmas bonus").
