Complete your internship in marine biology in Portugal and take part in research projects dedicated to the study and conservation of cetaceans and marine biodiversity in the Algarve. Supervised by a team of marine biologists, you will contribute to the collection of scientific data essential for monitoring populations of dolphins, whales, and other marine species, while gaining hands-on experience with field research methods.

This experience will allow you to develop skills in observation, scientific analysis, and marine ecosystem conservation in an exceptional natural environment.

Your Missions

Your tasks will be adapted to the needs of the research projects and may include:

  • Taking part in cetacean and marine wildlife observation surveys, both from the coast and at sea.
  • Identifying observed species and recording their behaviour.
  • Collecting scientific data (GPS locations, photographs, behavioural observations).
  • Participating in photo-identification protocols and population monitoring.
  • Entering, processing, and analysing collected data using specialised tools and databases.
  • Contributing to ongoing research projects in collaboration with marine biologists.
  • Taking part in theoretical training sessions on marine biology, scientific monitoring methods, and marine ecosystem conservation.
  • Raising awareness of marine biodiversity protection and learning about the challenges of conservation in ocean environments.

Tasks may vary depending on the season, weather conditions, and the needs of the scientific programmes.

Profile

This internship is particularly suitable for students in marine biology, ecology, environmental management, marine sciences, environmental engineering, sustainable development, or environmental studies who are looking to gain hands-on experience in scientific field research.

This internship is an excellent opportunity to develop skills in applied research, environmental data collection and analysis, and marine biodiversity conservation.

Additional Information

This internship is unpaid. In the vast majority of countries, there is no legal requirement to provide financial compensation to interns. Our partner host organisations operate within different local economic and legal frameworks, where hosting international interns is based on training and cultural exchange rather than remuneration.

Accommodation, meals, and transportation costs are paid before your departure. This advance payment allows RealStep to confirm and secure all your accommodation and local services with our partners before your arrival, ensuring that all logistics are already in place when you leave.
