Nitrogen-vacancycentres hosted in diamonds are emerging as a promising modality for biologicalsensing due to their photostability and sensitive, multi-modal sensingcapabilities. Although biological sensing in laboratory, optical bench-styleset-ups have been repeatedly shown, outstanding challenges remain intransitioning to reproducible, commercial diamond-NV biosensing products. This internshipwill focus on developing reliable fabrication techniques of diamond-NVnanophotonic structures for use in biosensing.
Utilisingtheir world-leading cleanroom facilities, imec have already successfullyconstructed nanophotonic structures consisting of silicon nitride photonicintegrated circuits on a silicon wafer substrate capable of exciting NV defectsand collecting their fluorescence. During the internship, techniques developedat imec will be used to integrate a thin diamond-NV layer on top of thisnanophotonic device. These will be suitable for integration with industrialmanufacturing to ensure commercial viability of the resulting device. Here, myown experience of quantum biosensing from my PhD will hep inform the bestproperties of the device for successful biosensing. The optimization will beachieved by utilising an integrated MW line along with the integrated NVexcitation-emission photonics to experimentally test the performance of thedevice with different NV sensing protocols. The resulting integrated photonic devicewill provide a platform capable of quantum-based biosensing.
