Track 1 - Preparing the Power Grid for the Future

Your Challenge

New technologies such as batteries, HVDC interconnections and hybrid installations are making the electricity grid increasingly dynamic.

In this track, you will work alongside experts to explore how Elia can adapt its systems and processes to keep the grid safe, reliable and resilient, both today and in the future.

What will you do?

First 6 months: analysing the impact

You will investigate how rapid changes in electricity generation and consumption affect the power grid.

Your work will include analysing:

  • the impact on grid stability;
  • the potential consequences for congestion management;
  • how operators can effectively monitor these changes.

You will also contribute to defining how today's operational limits could evolve in an energy system with increasing levels of renewable energy and battery storage.

Next 6 months: evaluating the systems

You will assess whether the current monitoring and control systems are sufficiently effective to accurately monitor these rapid changes.

You will investigate:

  • the accuracy and timeliness of the available information;
  • how effectively rapid changes can be detected;
  • which improvements could be implemented.

In doing so, you will directly contribute to the further development of the tools that support the operational security of the electricity grid.

Track 2 - Help Build the Electricity Grid of Tomorrow

Your Challenge

Within Elia's high-voltage grid, every asset and every electrical function has a unique name. This naming convention is essential for the safe operation of the grid and is used across numerous systems, engineering plans and installations.

Today, this process still relies heavily on manual work. As a Young Graduate, you will have the opportunity to contribute to innovative solutions that make these processes smarter, more efficient and increasingly automated.

What will you do?

First 6 months: discovering and analysing

  • Learn about Elia's high-voltage grid and its different systems.
  • Understand how naming conventions are currently applied.
  • Analyse opportunities to improve existing processes.
  • Contribute to the development of an intelligent digital solution based on technical information and business rules.

Depending on your interests, you will have the opportunity to specialise in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, automation, data management or system integration.

Next 6 months: testing and implementation

  • Optimise and test the solution.
  • Support its implementation across different teams.
  • Collaborate with experts from Engineering, Grid Development and other technical departments.

This will allow you to discover not only the technical side of innovation, but also how change management and cross-functional collaboration take place within a complex organisation.

You are about to obtain, or have recently obtained, a Master's degree in Engineering, Data, Automation, IT, Artificial Intelligence or a related field.
