Motivation:

Access to safe drinking water is essential for human health and well-being. Chlorination is one of the most widely used methods of drinking water disinfection worldwide because of its effectiveness and affordability. The reaction of chlorine with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter can lead to the formation of potentially harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs), including Trihalomethanes (THMs), Haloacetic acids (HAAs), and Haloacetonitriles (HANs). Understanding the factors influencing DBP formation is critical for improving drinking water safety. This research aims to generate systematic experimental knowledge and develop a comprehensive database on DBP formation under different water quality conditions. Such knowledge can support better prediction, monitoring, and mitigation of DBPs, providing valuable information for water utilities and researchers and contributing to safer drinking water and improved public health worldwide.

Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory experiments for the chlorination of water under controlled conditions to capture real-time data.
  • Chemical Analysis (TOC, Colorimeter for Chlorine, LCMS, etc)
  • NOM Analysis (Fluorescence Spectroscopy)
  • Discussion on data analysis
  • Scientific writing of results

Profile

  • BSc/MSc student in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Water Technology, or related field
  • Practical laboratory experience is a must.
  • EU student or non-EU student registered at a Dutch university.
  • Good level of English proficiency, both written and spoken.

Benefits

  • Work in an international and lively environment.
  • Work in an advanced laboratory with many facilities.
  • Internship allowance of €425 per month.
