Disaster Management Program — Art in Tanzania

Be part of the solution. Build resilience where it matters most.

Tanzania faces real, urgent challenges — floods, landslides, cholera outbreaks, drought, and the creeping effects of climate change. Art in Tanzania partners with corporations, government institutions, and the United Nations to turn awareness into action. This is your opportunity to be on the front lines of that work.

About the Program

Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has placed over 250 participants annually in hands-on community programs across Tanzania. Our Disaster Management Program is one of our most impactful — and most in-demand — placements.

You will work directly with communities, schools, and institutions to educate and empower Tanzanians across all four pillars of disaster management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and prevention. The work is real. The impact is measurable. And the experience will stay with you long after you return home.

Our program partners include Twiga Cement Industries, Coca-Cola, NBC Bank, PVC, AG-Energies Company Ltd., the Tanzanian Government, and — in our newest expansion — the United Nations Organisation.

What You'll Do

Your days are structured, purposeful, and varied. Working 6–8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, your tasks will include:

  • Practical fieldwork in schools and public spaces
  • Community education sessions on disaster risk and resilience
  • Program planning and reporting
  • Visibility and outreach efforts

Your placement is tailored to your background, academic field, and personal interests — making this program valuable whether you're studying public health, environmental science, engineering, social work, or international development.

Who It's For

This is a cross-disciplinary program. Students from all professional backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to apply. We currently host 15–40 international participants at a time, representing more than 400 partner universities worldwide.

Start dates are flexible. The program runs continuously year-round so that you can plan your placement around your academic calendar.

Life in Tanzania

Beyond the work, you'll experience East Africa at its most extraordinary — diverse wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and a richness of culture that no classroom can replicate. Affordable, sustainable safaris and tours are available for you and visiting friends.

This is not just an internship. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Funding & Eligibility

Erasmus+ funding may be available for eligible students. Ask your student office about grant options that could cover part or all of your placement costs.
