Providing the compute infrastructure that powers bol

How do you make our customers happy?

Team Cloud Compute is responsible for providing the compute and shared infrastructure for bol. Our customers are different than you might expect, we provide tools and services to our internal application engineers and not to the bol. retailer customers. The team provides compute infrastructure for bol. application teams in a variety of environments in the public cloud (GCP).

Our goal is to provide compute infrastructure that is highly available and highly scalable.

What are our products?

We refer to our products as our OPEX (Operational Excellence). Our primary product offering is compute infrastructure in public cloud (GCP). The team provides building blocks like managed Kubernetes, storage solutions, for our 1000+ software engineer colleagues. The team works to secure and innovate these products, providing new functionality and keeping the platform up to date to meet our business needs.

Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) is our biggest compute offering, allowing software engineer teams to deploy their applications in a self-service way while our deployment tooling provides them with the means to do this in a secure and compliance method.

Application Secret Manager that gives our users for a way to store, manage, and accessing sensitive data (API keys, passwords, and certificates) with enhanced security, versioning, and audit logging, enforces security and compliance policies at admission time in Kubernetes, reducing risk and operational overhead.

What tool-stack will you be working with?

CICD: Gitlab

Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Terraform, Puppet, Google Config Connector

GitOps: ArgoCD

Containerization & Orchestration: Kubernetes (GKE), Helm, Kustomization, Docker

AI Tools: Gemini/Claude Code

Datacenters/Cloud: GCP & some on-prem RHEL servers

Observability & Monitoring: Prometheus, AlertManager, Thanos, Grafana, ELK, Nagios.

Programming: Python/Go

Who is on the team?

You'll be joining a team of 5 platform engineers, a group product manager, and an engineering manager. Our team has a wealth of experience when it comes to building and maintaining infrastructure. It's in the critical path for many things at bol., which means that the team has high standards for quality and attention to detail. This team brings a lot of industry experience and an automation-first mindset that eliminates repetitive work while fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange.

What will I do?

Improve the approach to Kubernetes cluster management. Bol. is a fast-growing company, and we encourage development teams to innovate. To meet the demand for infrastructure we need to innovate the platform, keeping it scalable and secure.

Maintain operational stability: joining the standby shift, providing L2 support, updating versions of components, participating in post-mortems.

Support the needs of internal application developers. They expect highly available, scalable, ease of use and cost-effective compute infrastructure.

Collaborate with other platform teams to build feature products. Our cloud infrastructure landscape is complex. Innovation by a team often requires support by the others. You will support topics driven by those teams as well.

The impact you'll have

Build the core compute platform that powers thousands of workloads across https://bol.com, enabling developers to ship features quickly and reliably.

Deliver scalable, secure, and cost-efficient cloud infrastructure using Kubernetes and modern cloud-native technologies.

Create a seamless developer experience by providing intuitive deployment, runtime, and observability capabilities used daily by dozens of engineering teams.

Solve complex distributed-systems challenges at massive e-commerce scale, ensuring stability, performance, and zero-downtime operations.

Drive innovation in compute capabilities, from new workload types to smarter autoscaling and improved platform resilience.
3 reasons why this is (not) for you
Pros
  • Operating at scale Our team is responsible for ensuring the continuity, availability and performance of the foundational parts of hundreds of applications. This role is for you if you have experience working in highly trafficked environments.
  • Kubernetes Expertise We're heavily invested into Kubernetes as our primary tool of choice for managing compute workloads. You feel fluent in the topics of containerization, virtualization, deployment automation, networking and security. You have real world experience working with k8s.
  • Results driven Our team takes a lot of pride in the work that we do and the results show. We have a very low defect rate; we design systems that hold up through the holiday shopping storm of Black Friday. This position is right for you if you're able to deliver consistently and with solid results.

Cons
  • Focus on Internal Stakeholders This role emphasizes supporting internal teams (application engineers) rather than directly impacting end customers. If your passion lies in building customer-facing products or directly shaping user experiences, you may want to ensure this aligns with your career goals.
  • Blend of Modern and Established Technologies While you'll work with cutting-edge tools like Kubernetes and GCP. If you're seeking a role purely focused on greenfield development, this might not fully align with your expectations.
  • Commitment to Excellence at Scale Team Cloud Compute takes pride in delivering high-quality, highly reliable infrastructure for a fast-growing company. This means attention to detail and consistent delivery are key. If you're looking for a more exploratory or less structured role, this might require a shift in focus.

We're looking for someone who lives for technical challenges and brings the fire to match. If you want to scale the future of cloud-native infra alongside a team that prioritizes automation over repetition and growth over silos, don't wait-reach out and join us.
