African Community Life & Culture — Art in Tanzania
Not sure which programme is right for you? This one lets you experience several at once.
Most internship placements ask you to specialise before you arrive. This one takes a different approach — introducing you to the full breadth of Art in Tanzania's community work, letting you move across multiple placement areas simultaneously, and building the kind of rounded, cross-disciplinary experience that is genuinely rare on any CV.
If you are looking for something alternative for Spring or Summer 2026 — something that challenges your assumptions, broadens your professional perspective, and immerses you completely in Tanzanian community life — this is worth your attention.
About the Program
Art in Tanzania has been conducting community-based development work in Tanzania since 1996, welcoming approximately 250 participants each year from over 1,000 partner universities worldwide. Our Community Life & Culture Programme is our most flexible and exploratory placement — designed for students who want depth of experience across multiple areas rather than a single focused track.
You will live and work within Tanzanian communities, witnessing the daily realities of one of Africa's fastest-growing economies while contributing meaningfully to the programmes that support people living in poverty.
What You'll Experience
This programme introduces you to the full spectrum of Art in Tanzania's community work. Depending on your background, interests, and your university's requirements, your placement may include:
🏠 Orphanages & Family Support Working directly with children and families in the community — providing care, support, and human connection in environments where these are in short supply.
🏫 Nurseries, Primary & Secondary Schools Participating in educational activities across age groups — supporting teachers, engaging with students, and contributing to the learning environments of Tanzania's village schools.
🎵 African Music, Arts & Culture Attending and participating in local music events, cultural gatherings, and community arts activities — gaining a lived understanding of Tanzanian culture that no guidebook can provide.
🏛️ Local Government & Community Governance Observing and learning about how local government structures operate in Tanzania — a valuable perspective for students in politics, public administration, international development, and related fields.
🌍 Cross-Programme Exposure Depending on availability and fit, participants can also contribute to other Art in Tanzania programmes — from education and health advocacy to digital marketing, women's development, or environmental work. See the full range of options on our internship page.
How the Placement Works
Art in Tanzania's approach to this programme is genuinely personalised. Before your placement begins, we look carefully at your academic background, professional experience, personal preferences, and any specific requirements your university has set for your internship.
From there, we build a written weekly plan — digital, structured, and updated every Monday — that maps out your activities for the week ahead. At the end of each week, you submit a written report. That reflection feeds directly into the planning for the following week, creating a continuous loop of structured experience and intentional learning.
Your supervisors are present every day. Several live at the compound itself — meaning support, guidance, and community are available whenever you need them.
