About Art in Tanzania
Art in Tanzania (AIT) is a community-development NGO founded in 1996 that places approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programs across Tanzania. We host 15–40 international students at any time, drawn from over 1,000 partner universities worldwide. AIT's programs are sustained through a mix of institutional grants, foundation and corporate partnerships, and individual donors, secured and managed in coalition with a wide network of international development partners.
About the role
You research, write, and help submit — you don't just observe fundraising from the sidelines. As a Grant Writing & Fundraising Intern, you'll work directly with AIT's leadership to identify funding opportunities, draft compelling proposals, and track applications from first contact through award. Your work directly shapes which of AIT's education, health, environment, and youth programs get funded next.
What you'll do
- Grant research — scanning funding databases, embassy and foundation calls, and partner networks to build and maintain AIT's live grant-opportunity tracker.
- Proposal writing — drafting narrative sections, budgets, and supporting documents for funding applications to foundations, embassies, and multilateral donors.
- Donor communication — corresponding with program officers, answering eligibility questions, and preparing follow-up materials.
- Compliance & reporting — helping prepare donor reports, tracking deliverables against grant conditions, and organizing supporting documentation.
- Partnership research — profiling potential new funders and corporate partners aligned with AIT's mission.
- Visibility & social media — documenting funded projects and outcomes for AIT's channels, reaching over 50,000 Facebook followers.
The reality
Grant funding is competitive, and deadlines are real. You'll learn to write clearly and persuasively under time pressure, manage multiple applications with different formats and requirements at once, and see firsthand how funding decisions translate into which programs reach which communities — a foundational skill for any future career in the nonprofit sector, international development, or philanthropy.
Supervision & structure
Academic-level team leaders supervise your placement daily, and a weekly planning and reporting system keeps your work structured, purposeful, and aligned with your study program.

Students and professionals from nonprofit management, international development, public administration, business, communications, and political science — plus any student with strong writing skills and a genuine interest in how NGOs are funded.
Logistics & funding
- Stipend — interns receive a USD $50 monthly stipend — modest, but equivalent to about twice Tanzania's national minimum wage.
- Personal expenses — lodging, meals, and international travel are covered by the participant.
- Hours & start dates — 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday; year-round with flexible start dates.
- Funding — Erasmus+ and similar funding may cover part or all of your costs. Contact your student/international office early, ideally before you travel.
- Visa support — AIT issues an official Charity Invitation Letter and guides you through the E-VISA application.
