Artificial Intelligence Programme in Tanzania — Art in Tanzania

What is it? The Artificial Intelligence & Community Development Programme places international students and volunteers in practical AI work at Art in Tanzania — training local teams, delivering AI literacy in schools and companies, applying data analysis to community projects, and embedding AI tools into NGO workflows. Both on-site and remote placements are available. It is run by Art in Tanzania (AIT), a community-development NGO founded in 1996.

Where? On-site around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, or remotely from anywhere.

How long? Flexible — the programme runs continuously year-round, with duration adjustable to your academic schedule and goals.

Working hours? 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday.

Who joins? AIT typically hosts 15–40 international students at a time, drawn from over 1000 partner universities worldwide.

What does the AI Programme involve?

Your placement is tailored to your technical background, skills, and interests. Work spans four interconnected areas, plus remote support options:

  • Team training and AI capacity building — training AIT's local NGO team to integrate AI tools into everyday work — from content creation and communication to project planning and reporting — designing training sessions and embedding AI into previously manual workflows.
  • AI in schools and companies — delivering AI literacy training in Tanzanian schools and local companies, introducing students, teachers, and business professionals to AI concepts and practical tools.
  • Data analysis and community projects — applying data analysis to community development projects in health, education, and social work, helping organisations make evidence-based decisions where analytical capacity is limited.
  • AI in digital transformation and design — implementing AI tools in content creation, social media, and design workflows to produce higher-quality communications at greater speed. AIT's Facebook audience of over 50,000 followers means your work reaches a significant public immediately.

Why does this programme matter?

Tanzania's NGO sector faces significant community need, limited organisational capacity, and pressure to do more with less. AI tools — applied thoughtfully and taught effectively — can shift that equation. Your role is not just to use these tools yourself but to transfer the knowledge so the team can continue without you. That kind of capacity-building is one of the most valuable contributions an intern can make.

How does the placement work?

Academic-level team leaders supervise your placement daily, and a weekly planning and reporting system keeps your work structured and on track. You work as part of a multi-professional team of international students and local volunteers, combining technical, educational, communication, and community development skills. Computer science, data science, AI and machine learning, digital communications, education technology, information systems, and related fields are strong fits — but motivated students from any discipline with practical AI skills are welcome.

Who runs the programme, and since when?

Art in Tanzania (AIT) has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania since 1996. The AI & Community Development Programme is one of its newest initiatives, created to bring practical artificial intelligence capability into NGO operations, community outreach, and partner organisations.

What is life in Tanzania like during the placement?

For on-site participants, Tanzania offers an experience far beyond the work — rich culture, iconic wildlife, extraordinary landscapes, and one of Africa's most dynamic economies. Affordable, sustainable safaris and tours are available for you and visiting friends or family.

Can I get funding?

Yes. Erasmus+ funding may be available for this placement. Speak with your student or international office about grant options that could fully or partially fund the experience.
