Gone is the cliché of the loser gamer, locked away in his room without ever seeing the light of day. Today, e-sports enthusiasts are icons and it is estimated that the sector will be worth 1.6 billion dollars by 2023. In addition to generating vocations, this booming market is also generating new jobs that would not necessarily have been imagined 15 years ago.

Profession: Apex Legend Coach

Fabio Dores is an e-sport coach, and more specifically of Apex Legends, one of the world's most popular battle royale games. Interviewed by Keith Stuart for the Guardian, he tells how the pandemic led him to this new activity. Like any freelancer, he offers his services on matchmaking websites. Except that instead of going to Upwork, Toptal or YunoJuno, he goes to sites that specialise in gaming coaching: LegionFarm, GamerSensei or ProGuides.

In addition to being quite fun, the activity seems to be lucrative. After four months, his 80 hours of coaching have earned him $3,500. This should continue as Fabio is now one of the Top 20 coaches on LegionFarm. Yes, the job may be new, but the competition is no less fierce. And as for all freelancers, the challenge is to make a place for yourself.
