A not-so-straight line
Let's deconstruct this myth (which no one believes in anymore) straight away: your 'daddy's career' is a thing of the past. Gone are the days of linear career development, of climbing up the ladder year after year in the same company, of drudgery and deference. Which is a good thing.
We're now in the era of flexibility. Our career paths are no longer straight - they look more like a Grand Prix circuit. There are turns to take, pitfalls to avoid... and decisions to make. When you hear about 'bad pay', 'a dull atmosphere', or 'horrible overtime', you'd better ask yourself whether you're on the right track for a happy, satisfying career. To figure that out, we've come up with a list of 8 (really) good reasons to leave your job.
Some jobs are being automated, others dying out, others just being born... The changing needs of the jobs market are accelerating the transformation of professions and skills. And this might mean you have to change your strategy mid-race. So, to make sure you don't make the wrong choices over and over again, we've thought about how to deal with obsolescence in your profession.
Open questions
In the shorter term (because, of course, we can't predict the next 10, 20, or 30 years), to help you make progress in your professional life, we've examined the 'taboo' subjects that can disrupt your career. Don't be scared, the first is an intrinsic part of your humanity: conflict. Is conflict in the workplace always a bad thing? This is the question we asked one of our experts at JobTeaser (spoiler, it wasn't Max Verstappen – we already know what he would say), who gave us some tips on making sure conflict is constructive. The second taboo may scare you less, but it makes your bosses break out in a cold sweat: taking breaks. To back up our claims about the productivity benefits of an intellectual intermission (beware, it's not TikTok-friendly), we interviewed a doctor in cognitive psychology, Caroline Cuny, in our article What if taking breaks at work saved time?
So, while succeeding in your career might not always be a smooth ride, you're now ready to take the major journey into the world of work (and to get back up if you fall).
