So you're due to start a new job soon and, of course, you want to feel confident and make a good first impression on your first day. Ease your mind by making sure to prepare in advance.

For some tips on how to do this, check out our article "First day at work - preparation is everything" It'll help, we promise!

However, so you can feel in control and make a great impression on your new colleagues, you also need to make sure you have everything important for your first day at your new job. Read on to find out exactly what that is!

What should I bring to my first day at a new job?

You really don't need to bring much with you for your first day at work. But there are some essentials you shouldn't forget if you want to make that all-important good first impression

The most important thing is that you prepare yourself mentally for your first day in your new job and don't end up stressing yourself out. It'll all be fine! Especially if this is your first job, your new colleagues and superiors will be understanding, because it's always hard to start something new and you'll need time to get the hang of it. But try to stay positive and show interest on your first day at work.

What will HR need from me on my first day?

The HR department will usually request the relevant documents in advance, which you can send in by post or e-mail before your first day. But if you they haven't asked you, here's what you should bring with you on your first day:

  1. signed employment contract
  2. your certificates or a certified copy of them: school, college, university or any other relevant qualifications/certificates
  3. your unique taxpayer reference or tax ID if you know it
  4. your national insurance or social security number
  5. your bank details
  6. if necessary, the required work clothing or uniform including work boots or sensible work shoes

If you have these things with you on your first day at work, you'll make a good impression on the HR department straightaway. Most of the time, your line manager or a colleague will welcome you and answer any questions on your first day of work, rather than someone from the HR department. This means it'll be up to you to approach the HR department yourself and give them your documents. This shows initiative  and proactiveness on your part!
