In January 2021, as a number of big investment funds bet on GameStop’s share price falling as the company found itself in financial difficulty, a few thousand fans of the brand mobilised online on Reddit and took the world of finance by storm by instead betting on GameStop’s share price recovering. Besides making a lot of money, they demonstrated that this collective approach could also be political: by putting professional investors on the backfoot, they opened up a broader debate on financial speculation and its limits. Were we witnessing another David and Goliath tussle here? Only the future will tell!
