Have you ever been a mentor to someone? Derived from the character Mentor, a faithful advisor to Telemachus in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, it’s when an older, wiser, more experienced person supports and advises someone younger than them. But as modern society has become increasingly digitalised, mentoring has fallen out of fashion somewhat. Now say hello to reverse mentoring! The concept is very simple: the roles are reversed. In this version, a younger person helps someone older than them become familiar with digital technology. The trusting relationship they develop helps to enhance the mentor’s soft skills, at the same time as helping the mentee get on in our digital world. From Ancient Greece to YouTube tutorials for baby boomers, mentoring has certainly evolved over the years.
