Does the Heimlich manoeuvre mean anything to you? This first-aid technique is a way of dislodging foreign objects from someone’s throat when they’re choking. Promoted by Dr Heimlich in 1974, he claimed to have never actually had the opportunity to practice the technique for real in his life. It wasn’t until the age of 96 that the chance finally presented itself, when a fellow resident in his retirement home began choking on a hamburger! That day, Dr Heimlich jumped at the chance to save a life.
