Capable of deciphering manufacturing instructions and manuals that remain entirely foreign to the rest of us, they’re the real magicians of all things mechanical and electronic.

Fun fact
In modern cities, cranes are simply part of the landscape. Many of us will have wondered, at one time or another, how on earth do they actually get there? Well, to install a big crane, you first need a few smaller ones. The various levels are added one by one on top of each other in an impressive ballet of steel and cables. The biggest crane in the world is known by its nickname, Big Carl. It can reach up to 250m in height and has a lifting capacity of 5,000 tons (or 50 blue whales, or 3,000 hippos...). First built in Belgium, it was dismantled and shipped to the United Kingdom to help build a nuclear power station near Bridgwater. The journey involved 280 lorries and it took 10 weeks to reassemble the whole thing.
