Ombudsmen are typically appointed to investigate complaints raised against companies or organisations, especially in the public sector. As strictly impartial third parties, being attentive is important as they work to resolve disagreements.

Fun fact
Arbitration and mediation isn’t limited to disputes between people or companies anymore. In fact, more and more ombudsmen are working for NGOs and diplomatic agencies these days. The HD Centre, for example, is a firm based in Geneva that was founded in 1999. Their goal? To use mediation to resolve conflicts between populations. In May 2018, the centre’s director, David Harland, was responsible for getting the French and Spanish governments to come together and declare that terrorist organisation ETA had finally ceased to exist.
