A cigarette hanging from their bottom lip, a trilby hat pulled down low over their eyes and the collar turned up on their trench coat... we all know the stereotypical image of private detectives, but beyond the clichés, the reality of this career is much more complex.

Fun fact
In 2002, the world’s most famous private detective received an honorary scholarship from the Royal Society of Chemistry in England. Sherlock Holmes was the first fictional character to receive such an accolade. And the icing on the cake? A fellow society member – a certain John Watson (no relation) – bestowed a medal upon a statue of the famous detective during a ceremony at Baker Street Tube Station. Elementary, my dear!
