In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann, an English neurologist, organised the very first International Wheelchair and Amputee Games at his hospital. Designed to boost physical activity among veterans of the Second World War, the competition was the forerunner to the Paralympic Games, which weren’t officially established until 1960.
