AIG Claims: A Fulfilling Career Path in the Insurance Industry

Looking for a career that's both challenging and rewarding? Consider a role in Claims at AIG, where you'll be at the forefront of helping clients in their hour of need. We recently spoke with Lars Vissing, the Nordic Head of Claims, who shared his insights about working in Claims, career progression opportunities, and the fundamentals of being a great Claims team member. Contrary to what many people believe, Claims is not just about paying out settlements. It's about effective communication with clients, even when delivering bad news, and coordinating with stakeholders to ensure everyone is kept informed. "If that does not happen, it can easily turn a good story into a bad one. The bigger the claim, the more eyes will be on you. Structure and knowing when to ask for help are key," says Lars. But don't let that intimidate you. The key to a fulfilling career in Claims is a willingness to learn, adapt, and ask for help when needed. Lars himself started his insurance career as a sales agent before transitioning to Claims, where he learned technical skills from other Claims professionals. He emphasizes that learning on the job is the way to go and that asking for help and guidance from senior colleagues is crucial. The skills you will need and can build upon Tobias H. Larsen, HRBP and Lars Vissing, Nordic Head of Claims At AIG, the focus is on soft skills and openness to learning, rather than full technical insights. The Early Career Program is designed to provide ample opportunities for graduates who are willing to take ownership of their own development. "Being service-minded and communicative is more important," says Lars. "Take ownership of what you're good at and what interests you want to improve upon. At AIG, taking ownership is an opportunity and an expectation." And the opportunities for growth and development are many. From developing technical and negotiation skills to identifying potential leaders, there are numerous avenues for career progression within Claims and beyond. "Many successful Claims Adjusters choose to continue their careers in Underwriting," Lars explains. "Development plans and open discussions between managers and employees to set goals and know how to achieve those goals are crucial." At AIG, you'll be surrounded by a supportive team that works closely together, both within and outside of the Claims team. "I like to have a team that works well together. Showing people trust and openly communicate that help is within reach is the way that people can learn the business. This attitude has been the backbone of every team I have ever worked with," says Lars. A path for personal and professional development and growth As the Nordic Head of Claims, Lars knows firsthand the benefits of working in the region. "The Nordic culture is all about being respectful, honest, and direct," he says. "We take our work seriously, but we also know how to have fun. From traditional Swedish fika breaks to Finnish sauna evenings, there's always something new to experience and enjoy." At AIG, employees in the Nordic region have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive environment that values their unique perspectives and talents. Whether working in Claims or other areas of the company, AIG offers ample opportunities for professional development and growth. The company's Early Career Program provides structured training and mentorship to help insurance professionals succeed in their roles and advance in their careers. One of the advantages of working at AIG is the possibility of pursuing an international career. The company has a global presence and offers many opportunities to work in other countries, allowing employees to gain exposure to different cultures, business practices, and approaches to problem-solving. In the Nordic region, AIG is committed to supporting its employees in their personal and professional growth. "We have a strong focus on development in the Nordics," Lars says. "We work closely with our employees to set goals and help them achieve those goals. AIG is a company that recognizes potential and invests in its people." Want to know more? So, if you're at the beginning of your insurance career or a graduate looking for a challenging and rewarding career in the insurance industry, consider joining AIG's Early Career Program in Claims. With a focus on soft skills and openness to learning, you'll have ample opportunities for growth and development within the company. Supporting long-term career growth and satisfaction at AIG

AIG’s progress and innovation relies on a strong talent base that is fortified with longterm career growth and satisfaction. We encourage “growing in place,” which is career mobility within AIG. This provides flexibility for colleagues to pursue their interests and expand their talents in different roles across various parts of the organization.  Essential to this growth is offering ways to bridge professional and technical skill gaps, especially to under-represented talent. Colleagues frequently access AIG’s virtual catalog of thousands of learning modules: more than 87,000 courses and 560,000 LinkedIn Learning videos were voluntarily completed in 2022. AIG’s culture of allyship also inspires colleagues to support one another’s professional development—both formally and informally—with training, sponsorship, mentoring and networking opportunities. Forums in which colleagues help to lift one another up include AIG’s Accelerated Leadership Development (ALD) Program, General Insurance Professional Associate (PA) Program, Global Sponsorship Program, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and the AIG Academy.  Such professional journeys include a colleague who started their AIG career in the mailroom during college, then worked in areas such as underwriting, claims and finance before becoming a leader of AIG’s Distribution team. Another credits their AIG career growth in part to management training, which included high-level mentorship and coaching from senior management.  An environment of belonging is critical to sustaining a committed and dedicated workforce and long-lasting teams. At AIG, we aim to foster a workplace where colleagues feel respected, valued and free to express their individual opinions, needs and ambitions. This starts with conscious inclusion and hinges on managers leading by example. To that end, AIG has provided training to the majority of global managers on how to recognize unconscious biases and take mindful, proactive steps to change those behaviors—and our efforts continue.  AIG’s proactive actions help provide dynamic, fulfilling careers for colleagues and, as a result, quality outcomes for our stakeholders.
