The Royal Military Academy of Belgium (RMA) is a military institution responsible for the basic academic, military, and physical training of future officers and for the continuing advanced training of officers during their active career in the Belgian Defense department (https://www.rma.ac.be). It is fully recognized as a university, fulfilling the same criteria as civilian universities. The Royal Military Academy is also conducting scientific research at university level for projects funded by the Belgian Defense department or external sources.

The "Patrimony" is the scientific entity of the RMA, organized into several academic departments, conducting research and expertise:

  • CISS (Communication, Information, Systems and Sensors)
  • Physics
  • Mechanics
  • Social Sciences
  • Conflict Studies
  • Economics, Management and Leadership
  • Life (biomedical)
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Weapons systems and ballistics

The RMA-Patrimony offers a stimulating international working environment with state-of-the-art facilities and unique research topics. We welcome a diverse researchers population, coming from Belgium and abroad with a wide variety of backgrounds. Given the unique research subjects handled at RMA, researchers have the opportunity to develop a unique and extremely valuable expertise not only for research but also for Defence and industry.

PhD research at RMA

RMA can grant PhD’s in Engineering Sciences and PhD’s in Social and Military Sciences. Both require at least 3 years of research and the completion of a doctoral training. PhD research is systematically conducted in cotutelle with another University in Belgium or abroad, which means successful PhD candidates get either a double degree or a joint degree.
