Social Sector Volunteering & Internships in Tanzania — Art in Tanzania
What is it? The Social Sector Programme is Art in Tanzania's broad community development track, placing international students and volunteers across social sector work — orphanages, early childhood, education, women's programmes, human rights, elderly care, public health, and community psychology. It is run by Art in Tanzania (AIT), a community-development NGO founded in 1996.
Where? Communities, care centres, and schools around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
How long? Flexible — the programme runs year-round, with start and end dates that can be adjusted to your schedule.
Working hours? 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday.
Who joins? Students and professionals from a wide range of social sector disciplines. AIT typically hosts 15–40 students at a time, drawn from over 1000 partner universities worldwide.
Which social sectors can I work in?
The programme spans AIT's core social sector focus areas. Your placement is tailored to your background and interests and may include:
- Orphanage programmes
- Children under school age
- Care centres
- Education programme development
- Women's programmes support
- Human rights
- Elderly care
- Public health
- Community psychology
Daily tasks include practical fieldwork, planning, reporting, and visibility work.
How does the placement work?
Academic-level team leaders supervise your internship daily, and a weekly plan-and-report system monitors your work and reports on your study programme's progress. The outcome is learning to apply your education in developing-country conditions with limited capacity — gaining hands-on experience and a better understanding of the opportunities in a fast-growing economy. Your placement is tailored to your background, experience, and interests, and directly supports AIT's daily work with the communities.
Who runs the programme, and since when?
Art in Tanzania (AIT) has operated since 1996, welcoming about 250 participants annually. Its vision is to give students hands-on experience working in developing African communities across the full breadth of the social sector.
What is life in Tanzania like during the placement?
Alongside your studies, you gain an unforgettable experience of African culture and daily life, as well as extraordinary natural scenery and wildlife. Low-cost, sustainable safaris and tours are available for you and visiting friends.
Can I get funding?
Yes. Erasmus+ funding can be applied to the Tanzania training placement. Ask your student office about grant options that could fully or partially fund the experience.
